One of the highest top rated TV shows of all time, HBO’s Chernobyl (2019) takes you into the story of one of mankind’s greatest catastrophe.
The Chernobyl disaster happened on April 26 1986. It was a nuclear accident which caused nearby city Pripyat to evacuate. 50,000 people were evacuated due to the extreme levels of radiation that came from the damaged power plant.
Filming took place in Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant, a decommission power plant that was closed in 2009. Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant was a sister power plant to Chernobyl and the designs were very similar. Due to this reason and a lack of a containment building, the plant was shut down. Other locations include Vilnius, Kaunas, Lithuania and Chernobyl, Kyiv, Ukraine.
