Adrift is based on a true love story between Tami Oldham and Richard Sharp in 1983. The couple set out on a journey across the Pacific ocean to deliver a yacht from Tahiti. Their destination was 4000 miles away, San Diego, US. Tragic unfolds as they were sailing. A hurricane category 4 forms and their chance of survival slips away.
The film was directed by Baltasar Kormákur(Everest, 2 Guns). Most of filming took place in Fiji and New Zealand waters. Due to filming challenges in Tahiti, Baltasar couldn't film there. Fiji was selected due to its archipelago, similarities of Tahiti. Also, the country helped fund some of the production cost through its incentive program(criteria has to be met) which made it all more convincing to shoot there.
